Why Is the HD Thumbnail Not Available for Some YouTube Videos?
You paste a link, but the 1280 × 720 option is missing. This is common and has simple explanations.
Why it happens
- Old videos. Before HD thumbnails were common, YouTube generated only smaller sizes.
- Low-resolution source. If the original video or custom image is below 1280 pixels wide, no maxres file is created.
- Newly uploaded videos. HD versions can appear a few minutes after processing finishes.
- Private or removed videos. No images can be fetched at all.
What you can do
- Wait a few minutes and try again if the video is new.
- Download the 640 × 480 version instead. It has black bars because it is 4:3.
- Use the 320 × 180 version if you need a clean 16:9 image without bars.
If it is your own video
Upload a custom thumbnail of at least 1280 × 720. Read the full specs and use the resizer to export the exact size.
